The group was still a little nervous as we dove right into the study. I really tried to stay out of the way and allow them to direct the discussion. I had them discuss different parts of session 1 that stood out to them. Then we discussed page 17 from the member book and which statements they most identified were true for them. Honestly, between these two things it took the majority of the evening.
In closing, I reminded them that this next week may be very difficult as they asnwer questions to prepare to share their abortion story next time we meet.
A new group began last night. There are a total of 7 in the group, but that includes myself and my co-leader as well as two other women who went through a group over the summer and are interested in starting a group at their own church. Technically we only have three participants.
I intended for the meeting to be a very stress free experience. I shared about AWPM, STS, and had them share a little about themselves. Just in the little they shared, it was obvious that each one of the ladies are at a different place in dealing with their abortion. A couple have worked through it to some degree, but are wanting to take the next step while there is one that has not taken any steps what so ever.
Some of them shared what they were wanting to accomplish by taking STS while others shared their fears and anxieties. I was surprised at how honest and transparent they were. My whole goal was to give each one of them hope. Therefore I had one of the ladies who had completed STS over the summer share her story. She did a great job, especially since I put her on the spot.
We went over the basic structure of what each meeting would look like. My goal will be focusing on the “Connecting” portion of the member book. Obviously if they have questions from the material and/or homework we will also do our best to cover that. I asked them to look over and work on chapter one for next week, but not to do the homework since it actually prepares them for the following week. This way we can hit the ground running next week by discussing chapter 1 and then will assign the homework and have them begin looking over and completing week 2. (If anyone has any ideas on how to do this better, I am definitely open. I want to keep it as uncomplicated as possible.)
Today, I have been thinking about a couple of verses that I can pray for these ladies and God has directed me toward the following:
My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
O Israel, hope in the LORD; For with the LORD there is lovingkindness, And
with Him is abundant redemption.
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that
you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
I will post again next week to let everyone know how our second meeting went.
Today Pat received some questions that someone had regarding beginning a post-abortion group. She wanted me to share their questions along with her answers.
How many leaders do you recommend for a group of 4? For instance do you feel it is necessary to have a leader, co-leader, and 1 or 2 observers to take notes?
I think 2 leaders are always best to support one another and to pray for one another. You can also take turns in certain leadership roles.
Do you keep a file for each person in the group?
No, we just get contact info, find out how it is OK to contact them (remember confidentiality), keep our own leader notes about each member as needed for their support and encouragement.
How did you advertise the groups–newspaper, church newsletters?
We run notices of the upcoming group in every way that we can, church website, e-mail networks, the local crisis pregnancy center, Women’s ministry and church pastoral ministry leaders. Whoever will let us tell, we tell. Offer a confidential response telephone number to contact for information on the next group.
Do you require the completion of preliminary paperwork by the participant prior to the first group session?
No, just get their name and contact information so that you can follow-up if they do not show up. It often takes LOTS of encouragement and courage!
We would like to use the new study guides with the separate leader’s portion for our first group which is currently scheduled for Feb. 2008. Do you know when in January they will be available?
As far as I know from Lifeway, it will be a January 1st release. Keep checking back on the blog and we will keep everyone up to date on its progress. Or we can have your name added to our e-mail list to let you know as soon as we know!
When are your next training workshops scheduled, where will they be held and what is the cost?
I am doing a training at the Lifeway Women’s Ministry National Leadership Forum in Nashville in November, details are online at Lifeway. We will also be offering a training in March or April of 2008. The e-mail list will inform you of that as well.
Are you making training DVDs and, if so, when will they be available?
Not “training” DVD’s, but a DVD accompaniment for the leader to use in the weekly group meeting that will serve as an introduction to each session and prepare the women for the step to come that week. It is my personal testimony along with several other women sharing their healing journey.
Do you feel it is necessary to attend a training workshop before leading a group?
Not really, that is why we created a Leader Guide. Training is always good and will help you with ideas and support, but it is not a requirement for leading a group otherwise, God would not have been able to use me! 20 years ago there was no one out there to train me. We are here for you!
Greetings Surrender Sisters,
I know that you not many of you are out there yet as not many of you know that we are here, however, Jane and I will carry on until you find us and keep us company. I want you to be warmly greeted when you arrive!!
I am absolutely floating over the events of the past 2 weeks. God continues to bless my heart and to pour out His surprises. As Jane reported in her 1st entry, I have just returned form 2 very large conferences where I was privileged to share the Surrendering the Secret Journey with 100’s of women from all over the nation. I have received an overwhelming response to the new Bible Study that LifeWay has bravely published as well as excitement over the upcoming Leader Guide and Video series that will follow in January.
Jane and I along with the ladies who have partnered on the video are committed to helping you to find healing and restoration for your own heart as well as for those you minister to. God wants us whole, He wants us healed and He wants us FREE!!
I will post every time I get a chance and would love to respond to your questions and ministry needs. Please pass the BLOG site on to your ministry friends and let’s each one, reach one or two or three of the thousands of women who have been broken by a past abortion or abortions!

Talk to us!!
I am so glad that you decided to stop by Surrendering the Secret. Our goal is to keep this blog updated weekly with the latest news. To begin with I will recap the last several months.
In August 10 ladies from Tampa traveled to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina for the taping of the Surrendering the Secret video. It was an amazing experience. Each woman had the opportunity to share part of their story in a very casual environment. The taping occurred in a beautiful mountain home that took each person’s breath away. The following two days were spent outdoors taping Pat as she shared her heart to those who will watch the video. The LifeWay team was incredible and it was a blessing to get to know them.
The video is in the process of being edited and should be released in January of 2008. At the same time a Leader’s Guide and updated member book will also be released. We will keep you posted on the status of these projects.
This weekend Pat spoke at a ladies conference in North Carolina. I have spoken with her over the phone and she said it was a dream come true. She is now on her way to Kentucky where she speaks at another conference which begins on Wednesday.
Keep checking back for the latest details and updates. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I will answer them as soon as I can and to the best of my ability.
We love your feedback on the Surrendering the Secret Blog. (If nothing else, it lets us know that there are people out there reading the blog!) The best way for you to do that is through commenting. Under each post you will see that the last line says something to the effect of “Posted by ________ at _________ time,” “0 (or another number) Comments,” and “Links to this Post.” Click on the word “comments” which will open a new screen with a box for you to leave your comment. Type whatever you would like to say and then and then choose how or if you would like to be identified. If you have a Google or Blogger account, you can simply type your username and password and then click on “Publish Your Comment”. You can also leave an anonymous comment by clicking on the “anonymous” box. Other options for identification include using an “open ID” or leaving your name and website (the website part is optional). An “open ID” works if you have a LiveJournal, WordPress, TypePad, or AIM account.
At this time we do not have the word verification option set up. However, if you do see a box under the comment section that says word verification, then all you have to do is just type in what you see in that box. This option actually keeps us from receiving spam comments.
You also have the ability to preview your comment. If you choose that option, you will be able to make changes, but one you publish the comment, changes cannot be made.
I would also encourage you to use wisdom when commenting. Anyone and everyone have access to this blog and can read what you say. I definitely don’t want to discourage you, but just remind you to be cautious.
If you have questions, feel free to e-mail me at email@example.com.
If you would like to know when the Surrendering the Secret Blog has been updated without checking it, you now can! On the right hand column you will see a “get email updates” button on the top right. Fill in your e-mail address and click on “get email updates”. Follow the directions on the next screen to decide how you would like to receive updates. (I personally like e-mails, but that is just me!) Make sure you fill in the word verification step and then click “subscribe”. You will receive a verification e-mail shortly and then follow the directions in the e-mail.
I feel fairly confident that this is the easiest way to subscribe, but if anyone has any other great ideas, I’m open!
If you have questions or run into any problems, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks!
