I recently shared a graphic on my Instagram page that read, “These women that are seeking abortion do not need activism, they need compassion.” Wow, did THAT ruffle some feathers!
The caption of the post spoke about the brokenness that these women have endured, the condemning language that is sometimes used by fellow “pro-lifers”, and how this language prevents those with abortion in their pasts from healing and ultimately taking their place on this very important mission field.
As a result of that post, I was confronted by a pro-life abolitionist who said that I wouldn’t really be able to make a difference unless I added standing outside of abortion clinics to my areas of service.
It made me sad to think that this person was unable to see the pro-life movement as I see it, much like the “One Body but Many Parts” that is described in 1 Corinthians 12.
This confrontation got me thinking about how abortion healing is viewed by those in the pro-life community and wondering if its impact is truly being recognized.
Abortion in America
The current statistic for women who have had an abortion in the U.S. is 1 in 4. That was just changed somewhat recently from 1 in 3. (Though in my personal experience, I still see the statistic play out as 1 in 3)
Either way, that’s a huge number. It may even be hard for some to believe because so many fall into silence and secrecy after abortion.
Creating Ripples of Change
The beautiful thing about abortion healing is that when someone feels safe surrendering their secret and experiences true healing, their freedom propels them to become one of the strongest voices in the pro-life movement. They may not have the loudest voice, but because of the pain they have experienced, and the truth they now embrace, they do have the strongest.
One of my favorite quotes on this issue is from Karen Swallow Prior, Ph.D., that states, “These women (and men) who have lived through the agony of abortion, are perhaps, the most powerful witness we have for the lives of the unborn, the pain of abortion, and offer some of the most powerful pro-life voices today.”
These healed hearts are not only exposing the lies of abortion, they are encouraging the abortion-minded to choose life and helping the abortion-wounded find freedom. They are serving in their local pregnancy resource centers, as sidewalk advocates, as prayer intercessors, as abortion healing facilitators, and much more!
Not only are they serving in powerful ways, they are the trailblazers of the PRO-LOVE movement. They understand better than anyone that it’s the Lord’s kindness that leads to repentance and truth spoken in love can unlock prison doors. They understand that condemning language will drive women INTO abortion clinics, but words of compassion will communicate they are seen by the “One who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13) The One that can provide for every need, and can heal every heart.
What we do and How YOU can help!
I see Surrendering the Secret as a revolving door.
- The wounded and shame-filled cautiously step in
- They find community, forgiveness, freedom, confidence to embrace truth, and a healing voice
- They boldly step back out in the world to make a difference for the unborn and their parents
It’s truly a beautiful sight to see! And I hope that this message will help others to see that abortion healing is a vital part of the pro-life body.

So much truth here. From “hurt” … to “healed” … to “helper!” Love the quote by Dr Karen. God is, indeed, so very good to us, isn’t He?
Beautifully said, Jessie. I was recently told by a pro life person they could never support a pregnancy center because they don’t do enough to stop women from having abortions. It breaks my heart that women are being met without compassion. Your words are truth.
I love the redemption you’ve brought to the phrase “revolving door”. Beautiful God-given revelation correlating with God’s commission for all. Step timidly into His presence with all our wounds and brokenness, experience his healing, step out into his world – a new creation and bring in others to experience the same. Repeat.
