Mother’s Day can be beautiful.
But for some women, it’s incredibly painful.
If you have experienced abortion, this day can feel like a spotlight on what’s missing—empty arms, unspoken grief, and questions that never seem to settle.
While others celebrate, you may find yourself just trying to get through the day.
The Hidden Weight of Mother’s Day
Grief after abortion is often complicated.
It’s not always acknowledged or understood by others. In fact, it’s what’s known as disenfranchised grief—a loss that isn’t openly recognized or validated by society.
Many women silently carry thoughts like:
- “Do I even have the right to grieve?”
- “It was my choice… so why does it still hurt?”
- “How can I miss someone I never got to meet?”
These questions don’t make your pain any less real.
They reveal just how deep it goes.
The Confusion Many Women Carry
For some, the grief is tangled with confusion.
Maybe you didn’t fully realize at the time that you were already a mother.
Or maybe you did—and that realization brings its own kind of heartbreak:
“If I knew… how could I have done that?”
There are no simple answers. But there is space to process those questions honestly and safely.
When Trauma Silences Memory
For some, the pain doesn’t show up as constant thoughts—it shows up as absence.
Missing memories. Numbness. Emotional distance.
Trauma can do that.
It’s the mind’s way of protecting itself when something feels too overwhelming to process. Even when memories are unclear, the heart often still carries the weight.
But God is not limited by what feels lost or forgotten.
What We See Every Day
At Surrendering the Secret, we don’t see women who are unaffected.
We see women carrying:
- Guilt
- Shame
- Deep sorrow
- Questions that have lingered for years—even decades
We see women grieving their children.
We see women who regret their decision.
We see women who have never told anyone.
And we see something else too:
Women finding healing.
The Truth Your Heart Needs Today
If Mother’s Day is hard for you, here is what matters most:
- Your grief is real
- Your child’s life mattered
- Your heart matters
And most importantly:
You are not beyond healing.
God sees you.
He sees your motherhood.
He sees your pain—and He cares deeply about it.
A Hope That Holds
There is a promise that brings comfort, even in the middle of grief:
Your child is not lost to eternity.
Because of Jesus, there is hope beyond what we can see right now. A hope that one day, what feels broken and unfinished will be made whole.
Until then, you are allowed to grieve.
And you are invited to heal.
You Don’t Have to Walk Through This Alone
If this day feels heavy, please don’t carry it by yourself.
There is a safe place for you. A place without judgment, without pressure, without noise—just women who understand and are ready to walk with you toward healing.
Surrendering the Secret exists for you.
A place where your story is honored.
A place where your pain is met with compassion.
A place where healing is possible.

Surrendering the Secret is a DBA of Life Impact Network a 501(c)3 NOT FOR PROFIT Ministry founded by Pat Layton in 1986 as a full-service crisis pregnancy intervention ministry. Under Pat’s leadership, over a 30 plus year journey, LIN grew exponentially into a multi-focused international ministry that included a pregnancy resources center (A Woman’s Place Medical Center in Tampa, Florida); Surrendering the Secret (STS) a post-abortion recovery outreach; a speaking and training ministry; an adoption agency and an abstinence education program.
In 2014 Pat redirected all crisis pregnancy intervention services of Life Impact Network and focused her efforts entirely on speaking, writing and expanding the international impact of STS. Life Impact Network continues to be led by Founder, President, and Author Pat Layton and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and a volunteer National Leadership Team.
