While I was working in the office at my church, a bird flew into the building.
At first, I thought, no big deal—I’ll just help it get out.
I followed it around, opening doors wide, trying to create a clear path to freedom, hoping it would see the way out. But instead of flying toward the open doors, it kept going deeper into the building—more frantic, more disoriented, more afraid.
Eventually, I lost sight of it.
I had to go back to work, praying it would eventually find a way out.
But when I came back into the office a couple of days later, I found the bird.
It hadn’t made it.
And I can’t fully explain why, but it broke my heart into pieces.
As the tears fell, I was reminded of Matthew 10:29:
What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.
That little bird was not unseen.
Not insignificant.
Not forgotten.
God saw it.

As I sat with this, I couldn’t help but think about how often we do the same thing.
We find ourselves trapped—afraid, disoriented, unsure how to get out.
Doors are open.
Help is near.
But fear has a way of distorting our vision.
Instead of moving toward freedom, we move deeper into hiding. Deeper into isolation. Deeper into silence.
Not because we want to stay stuck—but because we don’t know how to trust what feels unfamiliar… even if it’s actually the way out.
For many women carrying the weight of abortion, this can feel especially true.
You may know healing exists.
You may have even seen glimpses of it.
But something inside still says:
- What if it’s too painful?
- What if I’m judged?
- What if I can’t actually be free from this?
So instead of stepping toward the open door, it can feel easier to stay in what is known—even if it’s heavy.
But here’s what I want you to hear:
You are not unseen.
You are not insignificant.
And you are not beyond care.
If God sees a sparrow fall… He sees you too.
He sees your story.
He sees your pain.
He sees the things you’ve tried to carry alone.
And His heart toward you is not condemnation—it’s compassion.
That bird didn’t need to fear.
The door that led to freedom was wide open.
It just needed to move toward it.
If you are carrying the weight of a past abortion and you’ve been unsure where to turn, you don’t have to figure this out alone.

Welcome, we are Surrendering the Secret!
Surrendering the Secret is a DBA of Life Impact Network a 501(c)3 NOT FOR PROFIT Ministry founded by Pat Layton in 1986 as a full-service crisis pregnancy intervention ministry. Under Pat’s leadership, over a 30 plus year journey, LIN grew exponentially into a multi-focused international ministry that included a pregnancy resources center (A Woman’s Place Medical Center in Tampa, Florida); Surrendering the Secret (STS) a post-abortion recovery outreach; a speaking and training ministry; an adoption agency and an abstinence education program.
In 2014 Pat redirected all crisis pregnancy intervention services of Life Impact Network and focused her efforts entirely on speaking, writing and expanding the international impact of STS. Life Impact Network continues to be led by Founder, President, and Author Pat Layton and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and a volunteer National Leadership Team.
This was so powerful for anyone stuck in the chaos of this painful burden.
A beautiful reminder that we are not unseen…that God sees every detail, especially those carried in silence… a beautiful invitation to someone who may be quietly struggling, a first step toward
hope and healing.
This is beautiful and so very true. I’d love to use this in my church’s marketing of STS. Do I need permission to use this?
Thank you and God bless you!
Thank you Terry! Please feel free to share!
Absolutely beautiful! Yes, trusting the unfamiliar is scary. Many times, making ourselves uncomfortable is where true growth and freedom takes place. Well-written! I know many will be blessed and led to STS through this lovely invitation.
This is so beautiful!
