From Healing to Leading: 3 Keys to Guiding Other Women to Freedom

The need for safe, compassionate spaces for women to find healing after abortion continues to grow. Behind so many everyday smiles are stories of deep pain, silence, and unresolved grief.

That’s why this work matters.

We need women who have experienced healing to step forward and gently lead others toward freedom. If you’ve ever felt that nudge, but aren’t sure where to begin, these three keys will help guide you.

Key #1: Your Healing Comes First

Before you can lead others, you need to walk through your own healing journey.

Many women feel called to help others but haven’t yet fully processed their own story. You are always welcome to learn and grow—but leading from a place of unhealed pain can make it difficult to guide others well.

The abortion wound is often deeper than it first appears. Like an iceberg, what’s visible on the surface is only a small part of what lies beneath. True healing happens as God gently reveals and restores those hidden places over time.

As a leader:

  • Your vulnerability invites theirs
  • Your commitment inspires theirs
  • Your trust in the process builds their trust

And most importantly—you matter too.

God’s heart for the women you hope to serve is the same heart He has for you. You don’t have to earn healing. It is freely given. Let Him meet you there first.

Key #2: Release the Pressure

Let’s be honest—leading an abortion healing group can feel intimidating.

You might wonder:

  • What if I say the wrong thing?
  • What if I don’t have the answers?
  • What if someone doesn’t finish the study?

Those fears are real—but they are not yours to carry.

Your role is not to fix, save, or force outcomes. Healing doesn’t come from having the perfect words—it comes from creating space for God to move.

When women commit to the process—showing up, doing the work, and spending time with Him—He does the heavy lifting.

As a leader, your job is simple (though not always easy):

  • Show up
  • Stay surrendered
  • Trust God with the results

You are not the Savior. You are the servant.

Key #3: Don’t Lead Alone

This calling is powerful—but it can also feel isolating.

You will have questions. You’ll encounter complex situations. You’ll carry stories that require wisdom, prayer, and support.

That’s why community is essential.

Having a network of women who understand this work can make all the difference. You need people who will:

  • Pray with you
  • Encourage you
  • Offer guidance when you feel unsure
  • Remind you that you’re not alone

Because the reality is—many women who come to your group are carrying more than just abortion pain. Their stories may include trauma, broken relationships, addiction, or deep shame.

You don’t have to navigate that alone.

You Are More Qualified Than You Think

There’s a common belief that ministry requires credentials or a platform.

But the truth is—your story matters.

Your experiences, your healing, your “me too”—these are the very things God uses to reach others.

You don’t need a stage.

You don’t need a perfect past.

You simply need a willing heart.

Authenticity opens doors that perfection never could.

Final Encouragement

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart…” — Jeremiah 1:5

You are not disqualified by your past.

You are equipped by what God has brought you through.

And someone, somewhere, is waiting for a leader like you to say,
“Me too.”

Thank you for this community that you have created. This is much needed today. I am very hopeful about becoming a member of this community, forming relationships, and learning from others.

Thank you so much for this article! I love the saying that God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called. He just needs our “yes” and a willing heart!

I am feeling so blessed and privileged to be able to walk along side and glean from your experiences and wisdom. I have been working with women dealing with past abortion experiences and cris pregnancy situations for about 20 years. Through my church k was trained as a lay counselor and have since led groups and one on one meetings. I’ve experienced a saline abortion and D&C abortion; along with 10 miscarriages in 10 years working with infertility. Blessed to have become a mother to two wonderful young men by the process of adoption. They came into life as infants and today are 29 & almost 31 yrs old today.

Surrendering the secret - Healing the heartbreak of abortion
Welcome, we are Surrendering the Secret!

Surrendering the Secret is a DBA of Life Impact Network a 501(c)3 NOT FOR PROFIT Ministry founded by Pat Layton in 1986 as a full-service crisis pregnancy intervention ministry. Under Pat’s leadership, over a 30 plus year journey, LIN grew exponentially into a multi-focused international ministry that included a pregnancy resources center (A Woman’s Place Medical Center in Tampa, Florida); Surrendering the Secret (STS) a post-abortion recovery outreach; a speaking and training ministry; an adoption agency and an abstinence education program.

In 2014 Pat redirected all crisis pregnancy intervention services of Life Impact Network and focused her efforts entirely on speaking, writing and expanding the international impact of STS. Life Impact Network continues to be led by Founder, President, and Author Pat Layton and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and a volunteer National Leadership Team.
